Backflow Prevention

Backflow Prevention is necessary when there is a connection to a public water system from another water source containing non-potable water, such as sewer, wastewater, pools, irrigation systems, etc. A Backflow Preventor is installed to keep the non-potable water from contaminating the public water system.

What causes backflow?
Backflow occurs when the fresh water (potable) side has lost water pressure. This can draw contaminated water through the cross connector. Yuck, right? A drop in pressure in the fresh water supply may happen due to use of irrigation systems, municipal plumbing accidents, or even municipal demand on the water supply. Backflow also happens when there is pressure build up on the waste water side, which will force the contaminated water through the cross connector to the fresh water side. A Backflow Prevention system will stop this cross contamination and keep your home's water supply sanitary.

Hartwell Plumbing and Heating is certified in backflow prevention (New England Water Works Association) and can install backflow preventers and cross connection control systems for both residential and commercial systems.
